Audacious Marketing Hall of Fame

America Online Free Trials Discs

Great work should be recognized and honored.  Because I believe that being different is one of the cornerstones to effective marketing, why shouldn’t those who have created some of the most differentiated marketing programs in history not also be recognized and honored?  This Audacious Marketing Hall of Fame is that place.

As of today (June 15, 2016), I’ve personally nominated the following marketing programs to my USA Audacious Marketing Hall of Fame.  I plan to write a short feature / case study about each.   If you have ideas of other marketing programs that eclipse those on my list, please send me a note and I’ll add your suggestion to my list.

Without verifying it, my criteria are:

  • The campaign made a lot of money for the company OR
  • The campaign set the stage for completely new dynamics in its category or industry.
  1. AOL disc distribution to sign up new customers;
  2. Cookies sold by the Girl Scouts of America;
  3. Radiohead In Rainbows pay anything pricing;
  4. DeBeers A Diamond Is Forever Campaign;
  5. CarMax reinvents the disparaged used car industry to build a $14 billion revenue business in 20 years;
  6. Pet Rock;
  7. ALS Ice Bucket Challenge;
  8. Apple Launches iTunes;
  9. Nike licenses The Beatle's Revolution;
  10. Ben & Jerry's naming ice cream flavors after people and events;
  11. Amazon.com's Zero Profit Strategy;
  12. Donald Trump uses unconventional tactics to gain press coverage and media attention for free and avoid spending millions on television ads;
